A Midsummer night's dream: Kevin and Whitney

When dreaming of your wedding day, record-breaking floods and torrential rains are never included in your vision.   However, when Whitney married Kevin on June 24th, 2017, this is exactly what happened.

The rain began on Thursday.  By Friday most of our community was under water.  Homes were flooded  from basements to rooftops.  Bridges were washed away. Roads were closed all over town, making it impossible for anyone to get anywhere.    The grounds of their reception venue, The Midland County Club, looked more like a beautiful Northern Michigan lake than a golf coarse and was inching closer to the ballroom with every raindrop. Our shoppe was predicted to be underwater by the weekend.   As a professional, it is my sworn duty to never share any behind the scenes chaos with my bride and groom before their big day.  Those stories are for another time.  Their wedding was no exception.   Although, I knew Whitney and Kevin's compassionate hearts were more concerned  for the well-being of wedding guests and our community as a whole than their wedding.  All that mattered to them was that they were going to be married.   Which is what made everyone involved even more determined to make their day magical.

Any of my incredible team members, friends, family... and even family members of my team who were able to get through on the roads,  pitched in to move all of the flowers and supplies from our shoppe to my house Friday afternoon- less than a minute from the country club and on much higher ground.   The living room became our work space.  Finished centerpieces were stored in any space we could find; including our bathtub.  Aside from a minor basement flood, we were fortunate to be able to concentrate on the task at hand.

When Whitney and Kevin's wedding day arrived,  the heavy rain had subsided, the country club was still above water and it was time to celebrate this beautiful couple.

Whitney had chosen tulle skirts in varying shades of pink for her bridesmaids.   I proposed to create garden- inspired bouquets in soft hues of blush and  white. Her one request was peonies for her bouquet.  I gave that girl the biggest bouquet of peonies she's ever seen.    She deserved every. single. one.

For the reception, I had suggested the feeling of walking into an untamed summer garden and she let me run away with it.  We created large-scale etherial centerpieces to create a focal point and height in the ballroom.   Smaller arrangements of sterling roses and blush peonies in mercury glass compotes surrounded by pears, greens and votives were placed on the remaining tables.    We finished the centerpieces with hanging candles nestled in terrariums and glass raindrops.   How fitting. .

At the end of the day Kevin and Whitney's dream had been fulfilled.   They were married.  And that is what matters most.

A Derby Day wedding: Matthew and Stephanie

A beautiful spring day in Michigan made the perfect backdrop for Matthew and Stephanie's May wedding.    The bride and groom chose her hometown of Saginaw for the celebration.  A town rich in history and her family traditions.

The wedding party spent the morning  preparing for the day's events at the lovely Montague Inn. The afternoon ceremony took place at the bride's family church then it was on to the reception at The Saginaw Club.      Stephanie and Matthew wanted to keep the atmosphere festive and casual.  They opted to have a progressive-style dinner to make use of the three floors of the club,  beginning in the main lobby with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.  Guests enjoyed a game of pool, a fine Cuban cigar bar and sipped on Mint Juleps while viewing the Kentucky Derby.   After cocktails, the 2nd floor of the club was opened for guests to partake in carving stations placed throughout the entire floor.    Everyone was treated to a live piano performance by Stephanie’s cousin before the party was moved to the third floor for dancing and dessert.

It was a perfect day in May.

Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Daniels, for trusting us with your floral vision.   We loved every minute!

Say hello to Katherine!

Katherine Barker is the newest addition to our [I must say], stellar, team. You might say she flew in on the wind and saved the day, just by being her beautiful, willing and capable self. She tackles each and every task that is thrown her way with determination and grace. We are so thankful to have her at Happy.Pretty. Here's a bit about Katherine, in her own words.

Photo of Me.jpg

What do you love most about Happy Pretty?

I love that it is a place where I can be exactly who I am! I love that I can express myself creatively and that I can dabble in all of my varied interests, that I don’t have to focus on just one. I love that every day is different. And most importantly, I love that I get to work with incredibly talented and inspiring people everyday. As Confucius said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life.”

What is your background?

I graduated from Michigan State University in 2016 with a degree in Creative Advertising. I thought I saw myself with a career in the fashion industry and thus, throughout my college career, served as Creative Director for VIM, MSU’s fashion magazine, worked for the fashion brand BCBGMAXAZRIA, and interned at corporate BCBGMAXAZRIA last summer in Los Angeles.

Who is your style icon?

Jenna Lyons, just to name one!

What is your go-to style?

A blazer, a pair of jeans, ballet flats, and some fabulous earrings!

What is your design style?

I can appreciate all different design styles, but I love both contemporary and traditional styles and I love mixing the two! I love clean, neutral spaces with pops of color. I am a sucker for a white sofa and I love bringing elements of nature into the home, like fresh grasses, flowers, etc.

Interesting facts about you:

I speak Italian; after I graduated high school my mom and I backpacked through Europe for 3 months; and I save all my J Crew catalogs.

Your favorite destination?

When my mom was in her 20s she lived in Bologna, Italy for 3 years. Ever since I was little, every few years, my mom has taken me back to see her host mother Giulia. Since then Giulia has become my adopted grandmother, and every time we go back, I fall more and more in love with the city itself!

What inspires you the most?

Other cultures. Every time I travel, I am inspired by the people; how they do things, what they love, what they wear, etc.

Stop in sometime to see us, and meet Katherine in person. We think you'll love your visit!

Year No. 1

A time of reflection from one happy girl.

It's been a year since I put my dreams out there for everyone to see.   A year of trial and error.  Mistakes  and successes.  I have learned so much.  Most importantly, I have learned not to apologize for who I am and the way I see this world.    Some may say it's through rose-colored glasses. I say it's through an idea that this world is a beautiful place.  And I intend to enjoy every moment of it. So when I saw the blossoms bursting this past weekend, I decided to set a table for one in honor of every single person who has helped me along the way.    This is for you.  Thank you for nurturing this crazy idea I had.  And for being crazy right along with me.      All my love-   Melanie

Welcome Friends.

Welcome to the  Happy. Pretty.  blog.

My little corner of the world where I will share ideas and inspiration that bring joy to my heart.

Happy. Pretty. started as an idea to merge all of my passions into one.    My study of interior design. My years of experience in event design and floral art. The way in which I gather several pieces to create a style and then capturing those moments with my camera. Lately, when asked what I do as a career, I never knew how to answer because I enjoy each facet equally and deeply.   I began to feel conflicted about which path was MY path so I turned my conflict toward the Heavens and asked for guidance.  The answer was so simple. I don't have to choose.

Beauty is everywhere.  Beauty is giggling  with my daughters.  It's strolling down the streets of Paris or snuggled up under my down comforter while the snow falls outside my window.  It can be a photograph that moves me to tears or a dinner table set with fresh flowers and the finest china.   The scent of fresh peonies. A newborn baby.  A great design book.  An hour long  phone chat with a loved one.  Beauty may come in different shapes and forms but each time I witness it  I have the same reaction.  My heart dances and I am happy.

Happy. Pretty. is about finding joy in everyday life.  After all, Life itself is the best reason to celebrate.  I hope in reading my stories and sharing what inspires my heart, that, in some way, I inspire your heart as well.

Blessings to you on this beauty-filled day.  Take time to stop and smell the roses.

Written with love and gratitude,

Melanie
